Visitor center for Øvre Pasvik National Park with botanical garden
Svanhovd is located by the Pasvik River in the middle of the Norwegian wedge that separates Russia and Finland in the north, in the core area for brown bears. The station was established as an experimental farm in the 1930s; the old buildings and birch avenue are now protected. Today the site is operated by NIBIO with research and knowledge dissemination. For visitors, Svanhovd is an authorized visitor center for Øvre Pasvik National Park, with an interactive exhibition about the valley's nature, wildlife, culture and history — with the brown bear as a central focus. The botanical garden with northern and alpine perennials frames the courtyard. The conference center has meeting rooms for 2–80 participants, approximately 50 beds with private bathrooms, a café and restaurant serving local food, and a sauna. Svanhovd is a natural starting point for experiencing Øvre Pasvik National Park and the Pasvik wilderness.
