Understanding the Varanger climate

🌊 Coastal climate (Vardø, Berlevåg, Båtsfjord)

Influenced by the Barents Sea which keeps the temperature stable. Mild winters for the latitude, but strong winds and plenty of clouds. Berlevåg is among Norway's windiest places — gale warnings are common.

🏔️ Fjord climate (Vadsø, Nesseby)

Varangerfjorden creates a moderate climate that characterizes the region. Vadsø experiences relatively mild winters and pleasant summers thanks to the fjord's stabilizing effect. The further inland towards Nesseby you travel, the more continental the climate becomes – here you'll find colder winters and warmer summer days.

🌲Innlandet (Tana, Pasvik)

Continental climate with large temperature fluctuations. Tana can reach 20°C+ in summer — perfect for salmon fishing. Pasvik is one of Norway's coldest places in winter, dropping toward −40°C during cold periods.

☀️ Arctic light

Midnight sun from approximately May 20 to July 25 — the sun never sets below the horizon. Polar night from approximately November 25 to January 17 in Vardø. The Northern Lights season runs from early October to March.
