White reconstruction church that presides over the fishing village
Berlevåg Church is located centrally in the fishing village at the top of Granbakken. The present church is a longitudinal concrete structure with seating for approximately 300 people, designed by architect Hans Magnus and dedicated on 11 December 1960. The church features a whitewashed exterior, a broad roof with slate tiling, and a copper-clad tower with a spire. At this same location stood a previous church built in 1885–1886, but when the Germans withdrew from Finnmark in the winter of 1944, all of Berlevåg, including the church, was burned down. The present church was completed in 1960 as part of the reconstruction effort. The striking white church is a prominent landmark in Berlevåg and belongs to Varanger parish.
