White reconstruction church towering over the fishing village
Berlevåg Church is centrally located in the fishing village on top of Granbakken. The current church is a concrete long church with seating for approximately 300 people, designed by architect Hans Magnus and consecrated on December 11, 1960. The church features a whitewashed exterior, a broad roof with slate tiling, and a copper-clad tower with spire. A previous church built in 1885–86 stood on the same site, but when the Germans withdrew from Finnmark in the winter of 1944, the entire Berlevåg, including the church, was burned down. The current church was completed in 1960 as part of the reconstruction. The imposing white church is a striking landmark in Berlevåg and belongs to the Varanger pastorate.
