White timber church from 1858 on the headland by the fjord
Nesseby kirke was designed by architect Christian H. Grosch and consecrated on 17 August 1858. It is a timber longchurch with 250 seats; the altarpiece (dated 1722) and pulpit have been transferred from the old Kiberg church. The church is the only wooden church in East Finnmark that was not burned during World War II, when the German army burned nearly all buildings in Finnmark during their retreat. Adjacent to it stands a cottage that is considered Nesseby's oldest building. The church is spectacularly situated on a promontory extending into Varangerfjorden and is visible from a great distance – a well-known landmark and photographic subject in Varanger. The surrounding area is also one of Norway's premier birdwatching locations, with wading birds such as common snipe, phalarope, and ruff along the fjord.
