About Grenselandmuseet
Grenseland Museum in Kirkenes is a branch of Varanger Museum located in Sør-Varanger, presenting the history of a multicultural border region with Finland to the west and Russia to the east. A significant portion of the exhibition focuses on World War II, when Kirkenes became one of Europe's most heavily bombed cities. The centerpiece is a Soviet Ilyushin Il-2 aircraft that made an emergency landing during combat operations in 1944. The museum also houses a Sami section and an exhibition on mining, which shaped the development of the city.
