10,000 years of Sámi cultural history by the fjord
Ceavccageađgi/Mortensnes in Nesseby (Unjárga) is considered unique in Europe. Within a limited area lie traces of continuous settlement over 10,000 years – from Stone Age tent rings high in the terrain, through turf houses and wooden huts, to Sámi settlements from recent times. Due to land uplift after the last Ice Age, the oldest settlements are located highest up. The site is named after the sacrificial stone Ceavccageađgi – the Transteinen – a standing stone surrounded by concentric stone circles. In the stone formation descending towards the fjord, approximately 300 ancient graves have been identified, used from around 1000 BCE to approximately 1500 CE, where the dead were wrapped in birch bark according to Sámi burial customs. The area was protected in 1988 and is presented by Várjjat Sámi Musea/Varanger Sámi Museum. In the summer season, there is a museum building with exhibitions, a small shop and a café serving coffee and waffles with free admission. A well-maintained cultural trail with signage guides you through the landscape. You can explore the area on your own or book a guided cultural-historical walk with the museum.
