10,000 years of Sámi cultural history by the fjord
Ceavccageađge/Mortensnes in Nesseby (Unjárga) is considered unique in Europe. Within a limited area are traces of continuous settlement through 10,000 years – from Stone Age tent rings high in the terrain, through turf houses and sod dwellings, to Sámi settlements from more recent times. Due to land uplift after the last ice age, the oldest settlements lie at the highest points. The place is named after the sacrificial stone Ceavccageađge – the Troll Stone – a standing stone surrounded by concentric stone circles. In the stone scree down toward the fjord, nearly 300 cist graves have been identified, used from approximately 1000 BCE to around 1500 CE, where the dead were wrapped in birch bark according to Sámi burial customs. The area was protected in 1988 and is presented by Várjjat Sámi Musea/Varanger Sámi Museum. During summer season there is a museum building with exhibition, small shop and café with coffee and waffles, and free admission. A developed cultural trail with signage leads through the landscape. You can explore the area on your own or book a guided cultural history walk with the museum.
