Bomb shelter from World War II in the heart of Kirkenes
Andersgrotta is a bomb shelter from the Second World War, blasted out of the mountain in the heart of Kirkenes. Work began in autumn 1941 and was led by engineer Anders Elvebakk, after whom the facility is named. Using explosives from the local mines, the shelter was carved from the rock and gradually expanded throughout the war. Kirkenes lay close to the front line after the Germans attacked the Soviet Union in 1941, and became one of the hardest hit places in Europe. There were over 1000 air raid alarms, and the town was bombed around 300 times. The shelter provided refuge for civilians during the attacks. Today a guided tour takes you down the stairs and into the illuminated tunnel system. Inside the facility, a short documentary film with archive material from the war is shown, available in Norwegian, English and German. The tour lasts around 30 minutes and is operated by Snow Resort Kirkenes, with daily departures from the entrance on Presteveien in Kirkenes town center.
