The people who lived from the sea â for ten thousand years
The Sami population of Varanger has lived along the coast for more than 10,000 years. They are sea Sami â a group distinct from the better-known inland Sami in that they based their lives on the sea, not the reindeer. They fished, rowed and gathered along the same fjord shore you see today. Their traces are everywhere, if you know where to look.
Who are the sea Sami?
The Sami are Norway's indigenous people, and have lived in SĂĄpmi â the traditional Sami territory spanning Norway, Sweden, Finland and Russia â for thousands of years. The Sami population is not homogeneous: there are mountain Sami (who herd reindeer), forest Sami and sea Sami. The sea Sami are those who settled along the coast and lived from fishing, berry picking and hunting.
In Varanger, sea Sami culture survived the Norwegianisation policy that long tried to erase the Sami language and culture. Today Eastern Sami and Norwegian are spoken side by side, and there is an active revitalisation of the language and traditions.

Varanger Sami Museum
Ăja â Varanger Sami Museum in Varangerbotn is one of Norway's finest cultural history museums. The exhibitions take you through thousands of years of sea Sami life: fishing tools, boats, clothing, music and stories. It is not a museum you stroll through in an hour â it is a place where you sit down and listen.
The museum has also restored sea Sami buildings in an authentic environment, including an old fishing station. In summer, live demonstrations of traditional crafts are held.

Nesseby Church
Nesseby Church from 1858 sits beautifully on a headland in the Varangerfjord. It is one of the best-preserved wooden churches in Finnmark and a central place in sea Sami church history. The landscape around it is quiet and beautiful â allow time to walk out to the church and look out over the fjord.
Living culture today
Sea Sami culture is not just museums and the past. In Varanger there are families today who speak Eastern Sami at home, young people learning joik (the traditional Sami song form), and craftspeople making gĂĄmit (Sami shoes) and duodji (Sami handicraft) using traditional methods.
The 6th of February is Sami National Day â a national celebration with gatherings, concerts and events across all of SĂĄpmi. In Varanger this is a warm and inclusive celebration that visitors are warmly welcome to join.
Tips for the cultural experience
- đïžAllow at least 2â3 hours at Ăja â Varanger Sami Museum. Take a guided tour if available.
- âȘDrive by Nesseby Church â parking is free and the walk down to the church takes five minutes.
- đTravel there on 6 February for Sami National Day. It is an extraordinary experience.
