The road to the end of the world â and a bit beyond
Few roads in Norway feel quite as much like a journey to the end of the world as National Tourist Route Varanger. From Varangerbotn at the innermost point of the fjord, you follow the coast eastward, past bird cliffs and fishing villages, all the way to Vardø â and further along the dramatic stretch to Hamningberg, where the road simply ends. Along the way you encounter an Arctic landscape you won't find anywhere else.
What makes the stretch special?
The tourist route runs through Varangerhalvøya â one of Europe's most distinctive Arctic landscapes, with open tundra, windswept mountains and a sea that colours everything. Along the route you'll find architectural rest stops and bird-watching shelters designed to blend into nature.
The outermost section, from Vardø to Hamningberg, is considered by many to be the most beautiful â a narrow road through a moonscape of weathered rock, where the abandoned settlement of Hamningberg lies as a quiet reminder of coastal culture.

The stretch to Hamningberg is closed in winter. Best time is summer and early autumn. Take your time, fill up (or charge) in Vardø, and check the weather â it often blows fresh out here.
