🧳 A weekend in Varanger

4 min read

48 hours at their best

Varanger is vast, and distances are long — so a weekend trip is about choosing one good route and doing it properly, rather than chasing the whole region. This itinerary is based on arriving in Vadsø or Kirkenes on Friday, and gives you a concentrated taste of the fjord, the coast and king crab before you head home on Sunday.

Day 1 — Arrival and the fjord

Land in Vadsø or Kirkenes, rent a car and drive along Varangerfjord. Stop by Nesseby church on the headland and the bird towers along the way. Drive out to Ekkerøy, where the puffin colony sits on the cliffs right by the car — one of the easiest major nature experiences in the region. Round it off with dinner and overnight stay in Vadsø.

Day 2 — Vardø, bird cliffs or northern lights

Drive to Vardø, Norway's easternmost city. In summer you take the boat out to Hornøya and see puffins and guillemots up close; in winter you swap that for a northern lights hunt on the dark, clear evenings. Visit Steilneset memorial and Vardøhus fortress before you head back.

Day 3 — King crab and journey home

Finish with a king crab safari — the region's signature experience — or a relaxed local lunch if time is tight. Adapt according to your departure times, and allow good margin to the airport.

Book in advance

On a short trip you have no room for manoeuvre. Book king crab safari and Hornøya boat before you travel, especially in season. Also check your departure times before you plan day 3.

Get the most out of your weekend

  • 🚗A rental car is almost a must — public transport is limited and distances are long.
  • 🎯Choose one fjord side and stick to it. You won't manage everything — and that's fine.
  • 🌌Travelling in winter? Save the longest evening for the northern lights, and keep the car ready.
  • 🧥Dress for wind. The outer coast at Vardø is raw even in summer.
