A compact taste of the best
Varanger is large, and distances are long — but in three days you can accomplish surprisingly much if you plan a little. This itinerary is based on arrival in Kirkenes or Vadsø, and gives you a good mix of nature, culture and food without spending all your time in the car.
Land in Kirkenes or Vadsø, rent a car and drive along Varangerfjorden. Stop at Nesseby church and the bird towers, and drive out to Ekkerøy where you can see the puffin colony right by the car. Overnight in Vadsø.
Drive to Vardø, Norway's easternmost city. Take the boat to Hornøya to see puffins and guillemots during breeding season, visit Steilneset memorial and the fortress. If time permits: drive the national tourist route towards Hamningberg.
Join a king crab safari — one of the region's signature experiences — before you round off with local food and head home. Adjust according to your departure times.
