The world's northernmost fortress – sentinel of the north
Vardøhus is the world's northernmost fortress and Norway's easternmost, positioned on an island in the Barents Sea in Norway's easternmost city. The present structure was built between 1734–1738 as an octagonal star fortress with low, stone-clad earthen ramparts. It is the third fortress on this site – the earliest were established around 1300 under King Haakon VI Magnusson to secure Norwegian sovereignty in the north. Within the bastion walls lie nine distinctive buildings arranged around a closed courtyard, including the commandant's residence, powder tower, and bomb house. Most contain their own exhibitions presenting the fortress's military, administrative, and cultural history. The entire complex was protected by the National Heritage Authority in 2007. The fortress retains an active military commandant and is the only saluting unit in North Norway. Sun salutes are fired when the full solar disc reappears above the horizon after the dark season. Forsvarsbygg manages the property, while Varanger Museum operates the museum exhibitions. The fortress area is open to the public year-round with free admission.
