About Vadsøya kulturpark
Vadsøya kulturpark opened in 1997 as part of the Fotefar mot nord cultural heritage project and is managed by Varanger museum. The park is open year-round and free to visit. The airship mast was designed by Italian Umberto Nobile and served as a landing site for Roald Amundsen's expedition across the North Pole in the airship Norge in 1926. The airship Italia, captained by Nobile, also made an intermediate landing here in 1928. At the northeastern shore of the island are remains of turf houses from a medieval settlement, considered one of Norway's best-preserved medieval villages. The park also contains numerous war memorials from the German occupation during World War II, including remains of gun positions, bunkers, and trenches. The cultural trail is approximately 1.8 km long, runs through flat terrain, and is accessible for wheelchairs and prams, with information boards along the way. Vadsøya and Vadsøysundet comprise a protected nature reserve with rich bird life; the rare Steller's eider overwinters in the strait.
