About Vadsøya kulturpark
Vadsøya cultural park opened in 1997 as part of the cultural heritage project Fotefar mot nord and is managed by Varanger museum. The park is open year-round and free to visit. The airship mast was constructed by Italian engineer Umberto Nobile and served as a landing site for Roald Amundsen's expedition across the North Pole aboard the airship Norge in 1926. The airship Italia, captained by Nobile, also made a stopover here in 1928. At the island's northeastern shore are remains of turf houses from a medieval settlement, considered one of Norway's best-preserved medieval towns. The park also contains numerous war memorials from German occupation during World War II, including remains of gun emplacements, bunkers and trenches. The cultural trail is approximately 1.8 km long, follows flat terrain and is adapted for wheelchairs and strollers, with information boards along the way. Vadsøya and Vadsøysundet comprise a protected nature reserve with rich birdlife; the rare Steller's eider overwinters in the strait.
