Tuomainengården
Kvenenes historie lever her i Ytrebyen
About Tuomainengården
Tuomainengården is a preserved Kven farm that opens the door to Vadsø's diverse past. The building was erected by Johan Petter Vinikka from Tornedalen in 1851, and later became home to the Tuomainen family who operated the farm with fishing, sheep, cattle and horses. The farm is located in the heart of old Ytrebyen, where thousands of Kvens settled in the 1800s and created their own community. Here you can step into an ordinary home from that era and encounter the story of people who arrived with hope and labor, and built Vadsø into the city it became. The farm bears witness to a period when language, tradition and work held together small communities on the edge of the Barents Sea.
