When should you travel â and what will you find?
Varanger is not a place that is pretty in summer and boring the rest of the year. Here each season is a completely different world. The polar night is dark and intimate. Spring's first light is almost painfully beautiful. The midnight sun makes you sleepless and happy. And autumn burns across the plateau in orange and red. There is no wrong time to travel here â just different reasons to come.
This is Varanger's winter dream. From the end of November, the sun is below the horizon in Vadsø, and the Arctic darkness settles over the region. But the sky compensates: the northern lights appear regularly, and clear nights give you a starry sky you almost didn't believe was possible.
The activities are many. King crab safari from frozen fjords is one of the region's most sought-after experiences. Snowmobile rides across the plateau, dog sledding along the coast and winter tourism in SĂĄmi culture are other options. Temperatures typically range between â5 and â20 °C â dress in layers.
For those who want the true winter experience without large tourist crowds, Varanger is a good alternative to Tromsø and Lofoten.
Spring in Varanger is a gradual victory over darkness. In April, the days begin to get long again, and the light has a golden quality you rarely see elsewhere. Bird watchers arrive â spring is the best season for migratory birds and rarities from the east.
The ice breaks up in the fjords, and it is one of the most beautiful things you can see. Still days with sun reflections over open water and snow-covered mountains in the background. Ice fishing is still possible in early April. Towards the end of May, the midnight sun begins to approach.
In Vardø, the midnight sun shines from May 15 to July 27 â but light nights are there from early May to far into August. Summer is calm and vast. You can hike in Varangerhalvøya National Park without meeting a soul for days. You can kayak along the coast at 11 p.m. in the strongest sun.
Bird watching is still excellent â young birds emerge in July, and it is easy to find nesting species. The temperature is pleasant: typically 10â18 °C, but with sudden changes. Summer storms from the Barents Sea can come quickly.
Remember to bring a sleep mask. Many visitors cannot sleep because it never gets dark.
Autumn is Varanger's best-kept secret. From the end of August, the plateau burns in gold and red, and the birch forest is colored by lingonberries and cloudberries. It is the lingonberry pickers' season â Finnmark has some of the most accessible lingonberry fields in Norway.
In October, the northern lights begin to become visible again after the summer months with nights that never became completely dark. The tourist masses are gone, prices are lower and nature is calm. Moose hunting and bird watching are active. It is a season for those who want Varanger to themselves.
