Time to get under the skin of the region
Five days is enough for Varanger to sink in. You won't have to rush between highlights, and you'll have time for the quiet moments that often turn out to be the best â an evening by the fjord, an unexpected sea eagle, a chat with a local fisherman. This itinerary starts from arrival in Kirkenes or Vadsø, and builds gradually out towards the outer coast.
Day 1 â Arrival and Varangerfjorden
Land, rent a car and drive along the fjord at a leisurely pace. Stop at Nesseby church, the bird towers and Varanger SĂĄmi Museum (Ăja) in Varangerbotn if you land in Kirkenes. Drive out to Ekkerøy and the puffin colony. Stay overnight in Vadsø.
Day 2 â Vardø and Hornøya
Drive to Vardø, Norway's easternmost city. Take the boat to Hornøya for bird cliffs up close (summer), visit the Steilneset memorial to the witch trials and Vardøhus fortress. Consider staying the night in Vardø to feel the atmosphere of the small town at the edge of the Barents Sea.
Day 3 â National tourist route to Hamningberg
Drive the dramatic stretch from Vardø to Hamningberg â a moonscape of weathered stone where the road eventually ends at an abandoned fishing village. Take your time at the rest stops; they are attractions in themselves. (The stretch is closed in winter â swap it for northern lights and indoor culture.)
Day 4 â King crab and tundra
Join a king crab safari and eat the catch fresh. Spend the afternoon on the arctic tundra â a short walk into Varangerhalvøya National Park, or a drive towards Tana with stops for landscape and wildlife. Keep your eyes open for reindeer and sea eagles.
Day 5 â Leisurely finish and journey home
Use the last day for what you didn't get to: a museum, a cafĂŠ, one last trip along the fjord, or a detour to BerlevĂĽg or BĂĽtsfjord if you have time. Adapt to your departure times and build in a good margin.

Weather in Varanger changes quickly, and some experiences (Hornøya boat, tourist route to Hamningberg) are weather-dependent. With five days you fortunately have room to rearrange the schedule â keep days 4 and 5 flexible.
Plan the five days
- đ Book king crab safari and Hornøya boat in advance, especially in season.
- â˝Fill up (or charge) in the larger towns â distances between stations are long.
- đIn winter: swap bird cliffs and tourist route for northern lights, snowmobiles and king crab under the ice.
- đ¨Book accommodation early. There are few beds in Varanger, and popular places fill up.
