🧭 A Week in Varanger

8 min läsning

The grand tour — from Pasvik to Nordkinn

A week is enough time to see Varanger in its full breadth — from the deep pine forest of Pasvik in the far south, via the fjord villages and Sami culture, out to the bird cliff and tourist route in the east, and up to the weather-beaten fishing villages of Nordkinn. This is the complete round trip, arranged so you keep moving forward without sitting in the car all day.

Day 1 — Arrival Kirkenes and Pasvik

Land in Kirkenes, pick up a rental car and drive south into the Pasvik Valley — a lush pine forest where Norway, Finland and Russia meet. Look for moose and bear tracks, visit Øvre Pasvik National Park or a bird tower, and stay overnight in the area.

Day 2 — Kirkenes and Sami culture

Explore Kirkenes — the border town with a Russian flavour and wartime history — before driving west toward Varangerbotn. Visit the Varanger Sami Museum (Ája) and Nesseby Church on the headland. Overnight in Vadsø.

Day 3 — Vadsø and Ekkerøy

Spend the day on the south side of the fjord. Explore central Vadsø and the airship mast from the polar expeditions, and drive out to Ekkerøy where the kittiwake colony sits right by the road. A calm day with little driving and plenty of nature.

Day 4 — Vardø and Hornøya

Drive to Vardø, Norway's easternmost town. Take the boat to Hornøya for a bird cliff up close, visit the Steilneset Memorial and Vardøhus Fortress. Overnight in Vardø.

Day 5 — National tourist route to Hamningberg

Drive the outermost stretch from Vardø to Hamningberg through a dramatic moonscape, all the way until the road runs out at the abandoned village. Take your time at the rest stops. (Closed in winter — swap it then for indoor culture and northern lights.)

Day 6 — Nordkinn: Berlevåg or Båtsfjord

Drive north to the outer coast — Berlevåg with its famous breakwater and male choir, or Båtsfjord, one of Norway's largest fishing villages. Here you feel the Barents Sea in your bones: raw, beautiful and real. Birdwatching, the harbour and local food.

Day 7 — King crab and the journey home

Round off the week with a king crab safari and a fresh catch before driving back toward Kirkenes or Vadsø. Adjust to your departure times and leave a good margin for the long distances.

Long distances — plan the driving

On a week-long trip you cover large distances. From Pasvik in the south to Berlevåg in the north is several hours of driving. Fill up in the towns, check weather and road status, and book accommodation along the way in advance — there are few beds in the region.

Plan the week

  • 📅Book accommodation for the whole week before departure — especially in Vardø, Berlevåg and Båtsfjord.
  • 🦀Put the king crab safari and Hornøya boat early in your booking; they fill up fast in season.
  • ⛽Plan fuel/charging around the long legs toward Nordkinn.
  • 🌌In winter: replace the tourist route and bird cliff with northern lights, snowmobiling and king crab under the ice.
  • 🧥Pack for all seasons — the outer coast is raw, and the weather turns quickly.
