Time to get under the region's skin
Five days is enough for Varanger to settle in. You avoid rushing between the highlights, and you get time for the quiet moments that often turn out to be the best â an evening by the fjord, an unexpected white-tailed eagle, a chat with a local fisherman. This plan assumes arrival in Kirkenes or VadsĂž, and gradually builds outward toward the open coast.
Day 1 â Arrival and the Varangerfjord
Land, pick up a rental car and drive along the fjord at an easy pace. Stop at Nesseby Church, the bird towers and the Varanger Sami Museum (Ăja) in Varangerbotn if you land in Kirkenes. Drive out to EkkerĂžy and the kittiwake colony. Overnight in VadsĂž.
Day 2 â VardĂž and HornĂžya
Drive to VardĂž, Norway's easternmost town. Take the boat to HornĂžya for a bird cliff up close (summer), visit the Steilneset Memorial to the witch trials and VardĂžhus Fortress. Consider staying the night in VardĂž to feel the atmosphere of the little town at the very edge of the Barents Sea.
Day 3 â National tourist route to Hamningberg
Drive the dramatic stretch from VardĂž to Hamningberg â a moonscape of weathered stone where the road finally runs out at an abandoned fishing village. Take your time at the rest stops; they are attractions in themselves. (The stretch is closed in winter â swap it then for northern lights and indoor culture.)
Day 4 â King crab and tundra
Join a king crab safari and eat the catch fresh. Spend the afternoon on the Arctic tundra â a short hike toward VarangerhalvĂžya National Park, or a drive toward Tana with stops for landscape and wildlife. Keep an eye out for reindeer and white-tailed eagles.
Day 5 â A calm finish and the journey home
Spend the last day on what you missed: a museum, a café, a final walk along the fjord, or a detour toward BerlevÄg or BÄtsfjord if you have time. Adjust to your departure times and leave a good margin.

Build in some slack
The weather in Varanger turns quickly, and some experiences (the HornĂžya boat, the tourist route to Hamningberg) are weather-dependent. With five days you fortunately have room to rearrange the programme â keep days 4 and 5 flexible.
Plan the five days
- đ Book the king crab safari and HornĂžya boat in advance, especially in season.
- âœFill up (or charge) in the larger towns â the distances between stations are long.
- đIn winter: swap the bird cliff and tourist route for northern lights, snowmobiling and king crab under the ice.
- đšBook accommodation early. There are few beds in Varanger and popular places fill up.
